A local man who was admitted at intensive care after a boat fire back in December, is doing much better now.

Media official at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) where he is being treated at confirmed this to RaajjeMV, adding that the 40-year-old has since been transferred to a private room.

However, the official said that they were unsure on when he will be discharged.

The man is to have sustained burns to 20 percent of his body in the fire that broke out on two boats docked at Thilafushi island of Kaafu atoll on December 24.

Two people were transferred to IGMH following injuries including an expatriate worker who was released from emergency after treatment.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said that the fire occurred while refueling a sea vessel docked at the Villa site at Thilafushi island, and that the fire, which started around 4:39pm on December 24, had been controlled in about an hour.

They also confirmed that one of the boats where the fire occurred was destroyed beyond recovery and is now unusable.
