Maldives Media Council (MMC) has sought action in the case of journalists at online news outlet, ‘Vaguthu’ being subject to death threats, at the Maldives Police Service.

In a statement publicized regarding the death threats ‘Vaguthu’ journalists are reported to be receiving after a report regarding religious extremism, was shared in the online publication on December 31, 2020.

As such, the media council revealed that the news outlet reported to have been receiving death threats since then, which has stirred immense concern within the council.

The council went on to discourage such acts of terror, noting that the country’s constitution assures the freedom of opinion and speech to every citizen, which does not mean it must be subject to harassment and terrorizing the individual.

MMC strictly condemned the act, stressing that journalists have been subject to different types of harassment and have been on the end of death threats on numerous occasions.

As such, under its responsibilities to report such offenses to the relevant authorities and resolve them, the media council has since sought action against the offenders, at the police institution.

MMC sought full investigations into the death threats and requested police to take the required action in the case.
