Executive Secretary for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Patricia Espinosa congratulated the Maldives' decision to achieve net-zero emission targets by 2030.

Patricia announced her support for the Maldives' net-zero emission targets in a tweet, referring specifically to the submission of an updated and enhanced Nationally Determinant Contribution (NDC) which projects that the Maldives could achieve net-zero emissions as early as 2030. The United Nations (UN) has also congratulated and expressed support for the Maldives' ambitious climate goals.

Speaking at the Climate Ambition Summit held at the UN Headquarters in New York last year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that the Maldives could realistically achieve net-zero emission goals by 2030 with support from the international community.

The President also declared that the Maldives was fully prepared to face any difficulties brought about by climate change by analyzing the changes evident in the environment around us, and said that the Maldives compelled to take steps to combat the immediacy of climate change as one of the countries most affected by the phenomena.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that net-zero emission targets are a good beginning to the Maldives' efforts to combat climate change, and reaffirmed that the nation would be moving forward with more optimistic climate goals in the future.
