Dr. Shah Abdulla Mahir, Chairperson of the Steering Committee for Covid-19 19 at the Ministry of Health, advised that the threat of Covid-19 still looms large and that New Year celebrations should therefore reflect new normal guidelines to maintain public safety.

Speaking at the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC)’s Covid-19 press briefing on Sunday night, the doctor emphasized the importance of being aware of and conforming to new normal regulations when planning and attending parties or public gatherings.

He said that wearing masks, practicing hand hygiene and maintaining a distance of at least three feet when with others are the most important steps one can take to protect themselves and others against Covid-19.

Dr. Shah expressed the importance of remembering these rules as people planned for the upcoming New Year celebrations, and asked party organizers to consider a service-to-table options over buffet settings when settling catering for their events.

A lot of people would want to do something special for the upcoming New Years celebrations. However, I know this years celebrations will be different for sure; hosting parties and gatherings are permitted, but its important that the public follow HPA guidelines when going about their New Years celebrations”

Highlighting that the threat for Covid-19 had not lessened, Dr. Shah said extra caution was necessary following the discovery of a new, more virulent variant of Covid-19, and that everyone should familiarize themselves with new normal regulations until vaccines could be secured.
