Maldives Covid-19 tally at 13,402 with lowest daily rise in months

With the lowest daily Covid-19 cases reported in months, Maldives has confirmed a total of 13,402 coronavirus infections since the pandemic surfaced in the island nation on March 7.

10 new infections were confirmed out of the 2,297 samples tested between 6pm Tuesday and 6pm Wednesday and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that most cases are from the Greater Malé Region.

While the number of daily cases being reported from the capital region has remained at seven since Monday, remaining cases announced on Wednesday include two from operational resorts and one from a residential island.

Further, with 26 additional recoveries, Maldives has recorded a total of 12,786 recoveries from the fatal infection, which has taken 48 lives in the island nation thus far.

Out of the 561 active coronavirus cases in the country, 54 patients remain hospitalized for treatment which is seven less than the previous day. 149 patients are seeking treatment at isolation facilities currently.

Out of the over 500 active case, 447 are in the Greater Malé Region, 44 in outlying atolls, 43 in operational resorts, nine in liveaboard vessels, 17 in islands under development and one in an industrial island.

Statistics released by the public health authority show that 63 percent of the total cases are local cases, with 8,457 Maldivians having contracted the virus thus far.

24 percent of the Covid-19 tally is Bangladeshi nationals with 3,276 of them testing positive, 781 Indian nationals which makes up 5.83 percent of the cases, 356 Sri Lankan nationals which make up 2.66 percent of the virus count and 157 Nepalese nationals, which is about 1.17 percent of the Covid-19 tally in Maldives.

Further, 41 nationals from Russia and China each contribute 0.31 percent each, with 293 patients from other nationalities making up 2.19 percent of the virus count.

HPA revealed that 68.73 percent of the total coronavirus case count recorded in the Maldives is men, with 9,211 male patients and 4,171 women who contracted the virus, which contributes 31.12 percent o the Covid-19 tally.

Healthcare workers have collected 276,944 samples for Covid-19 testing in the island nation, to date.
