Request made in a letter sent
Case submitted to Human Rights Commission of the Maldives

Jumhooree Party Secretary General Ahmed Sameer says that the Party has sent in a request for daily meetings with jailed leader of the Party, Qasim Ibrahim.

In a letter sent to Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef, on Sunday, the Party stated that they needed the guidance from the Party leader, which is stated in the Party laws. Sameer’s letter stated that they needed to meet Qasim to run the operations of the Party.

Therefore, Sameer had requested to arrange daily meetings with Qasim.

This case has also been submitted to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The letter sent to HRCM stated that previously, when leaders of the political parties were jailed, they were granted meetings as requested. This, they say had been denied to them since Qasim was jailed.

The letter also noted that Qasim, though he was serving a remand sentence, was kept in similar conditions as those serving sentences. This, they said was unacceptable and requested HRCM to review this issue.
