Police have apprehended a Brazilian man attempting to smuggle drugs concealed inside his body.
21-year-old Renato Alfredo was arrested upon arrival November 28.
Noting that officers of the Maldives Customs Service had stopped the individual following suspicious activity, police said that an x-ray of his body was conducted revealing a concealed substance.
Customs immediately notified the police, who took the suspect to a hospital where doctors confirmed the detection of a “foreign substance” inside his body.
While the suspect was admitted at hospital under police supervision, police said that he had evacuated 66 packets of a suspected substance.
However, police did not reveal the type of drug confiscated.
The Criminal Court has remanded Alfredo for the duration of investigation and trial.
Police’s Drug Enforcement Department continues to investigate the case.
