Maldives Police Service (MPS) has made an arrest in connection to the abduction of a women in Maldives capital.

Media official at the police institution told RaajjeMV that a 31-year-old Maldivian man has been arrested in connection to Shirumeena Aboobakuru’s abduction.

The arrest was made on Tuesday, under a court order.

Police did not disclose further details in connection to the case.

The 33-year-old Maldivian woman native to Kinolhas island in Raa atoll was reported missing on Saturday. A day after police publicized a missing persons’ report, Shirumeena returned home. The victim is currently hospitalized for treatment.

Police cited the victim’s family having stated that Shirumeena was held captive, threatened and abused.

The authorities are currently running further investigations into her abduction and abuse, and also reported that Shirumeena was blackmailed and robbed.

Shirumeena was reported missing at 10:45pm on Saturday and she was last heard of the same day at 1:30pm.

Local media reports have cited the victim’s family having stated that Shirumeena was robbed of an amount between MVR 20,000 – 25,000 and she was also on the receiving end of death threats. She returned home on Monday morning, with several injuries.

The victim was left mentally traumatized by the incident and she can barely speak, local media outlets reported.
