The People’s Majlis has approved the appointment of four members to the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
The names approved were Aminath Shadhiya, Aminath Shiuna, Shuaib Abdul Rahman and Gasim Abdul Kareem.
50 parliamentarians voted to approve the appointment of Shadiya and Shiuna to the commission. Their nominations were highly recommended by the committee on independent institutions that reviewed the nominations as well.
The remaining two nominations received votes from 51 parliamentarians and Shuaib’s appointments was recommended in the parliamentary committee report.
Gasim served prison time during the administration of now incarcerated former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, for involvement in the largest case of graft recorded in the country’s history, where state coffers were embezzled through the Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation.
He was serving as the Manager of Bank of Maldives (BML)’s Nilandhoo branch back then.
Gasim’s name was forwarded for parliamentary approval from the applicants to the vacancy at NIC, by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
NIC comprises of five members and currently consists of recently appointed member, Colonel (Retired) Ahmed Jihad alone.
Gasim’s nomination came following the dismissal of NIC President Ahmed Sulaiman and the others were nominated as three other members resigned after a Majlis probe. Sulaiman was dismissed in August as per a Majlis recommendation.
