51 new cases of the coronavirus pandemic have been confirmed in the Maldives.

Nightly statistics publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that 33 out of the total were Maldivians whereas 18 were foreigners.

Thursday’s cases were out of the 1,534 samples tested within the past 24 hours. 46 cases were detected in the greater Malé region whereas five cases were detected from residential islands.

With this development, a total of 11,113 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in the island nation since the pandemic surfaced in Maldives on March 7.

51 additional recoveries were also reported by 6pm Thursday, which pushes the total number of recovered patients to 9,931.

While cases were being reported mostly from the epicenter, Malé City before authorities entered the third phase of lockdown easing in July, the pandemic has now spread to residential islands as well.

As such, individuals were allowed to travel from the capital region to residential islands with the requirement to go into quarantine upon arrival, which provoked cases to swiftly spread across the island nation.

As such, there are active cases of the virus in 18 residential islands and 19 resorts, with the inclusion of 15 tourists and 22 resort workers.

Maldives currently has a total of 1,140 active cases, out of which 400 patients are seeking treatment from isolation facilities, this is an increase in comparison to the 367 patients isolated by Wednesday.

In addition, the number of hospitalized patients declined on Thursday, to 54 from 61.

Most of the active cases in residential islands currently are local cases, as such there are 146 active cases across islands in total, with 87 local cases and 59 foreigners.
