Seven suspects have been arrested in connection to Monday’s major drug bust.

130 kilograms of drugs were seized through an special police operation on Monday, from a boat docked near the capital’s suburb Hulhumale’.

Police said that sea operation was conducted following reports of a major drug shipment headed towards the country, by a local drug network working with foreigners.

Three residence’s in Hulhumale’ and two in Male’ City were searched in relation to the drug bust.

The drugs seized were heroin and methamphetamine.

Police also identified a Shaheeb Ibrahim, 42, and Ahmed Moosa, 48, as the ringleaders of the network; Shaheeb is a senior official of the opposition People’s National Congress (PNC).

Police further said that Shaheeb is also linked to the Iranian boat caught with over 70 kilograms of drugs in inside Maldivian territory in late 2019.

Six of the seven arrested are between the ages of 25 and 48, while one is a minor.

While the Juvenile Court has remanded the minor for 10 days, Ahmed Moosa was remanded by five days. Shaheeb and the remaining four are remanded for 15 days.
