Maldives could be the only country in the world that can be declared vaccinated against the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of tourist activity, says the Director General of the European Institute for Export Compliance (EIFEC), Charles M. Giacoma.

Giacoma said this in an exclusive interview to RaajjeTV’s Maldives Weekly on Saturday, to discuss the institution’s work to introduce and implement its compliance standards for health and sanitation in Maldives.

As such, the DG noted that the institution is linked to areas tied to international security, whether it be nuclear, geological or chemical warfare sanctions.

Highlighting that they have been urged to develop an emergency standard to sustain all organizations around the world due to the new event for international security and stability, Giacoma stated that Maldives has been hit hard. He added that this is one of the reasons the institution is here and also because there are historic relationships within.

Definitely Maldives is in need as all other countries, said Giacoma who noted that the island nation is a unique possibility in comparison to many other countries EIFEC is working with, in terms of risk profile for epidemics.

Highlighting that Maldives can be the only country in the world that can be declared to be vaccinated against the pandemic in terms of tourist activity, he stated that it provides a unique opportunity for Maldives to stand out from many other destinations.

It needs to be understood that this event was extraordinary, it hits everyone by surprise and even the toughest organizations were hit hard. Maldives has been hit hard on the number of tourist bookings travels and the mechanism of travels having stopped almost around the world.

Giacoma revealed that the main fact to this pandemic is not only health, is the pandemic of fear, which puts the people in different conditions.

Voluntary social distancing is the key effect for 50 percent of economy contributed to the financial crisis and 50 percent of the economy due to lockdown. So the point we have to address is how to restore confidence in people to get their voluntary social distancing and get back to travel. This will take time but is definitely our main mission”
Charles M. Giacoma, Director General of EIFEC

Shedding light on why EIFEC took the initiative and considered the Health Risk Emergency Compliance for all organization and sanitization during the current situation, Giacoma stated that the pandemic hit everywhere and everyone from the smallest businesses to the biggest organizations, everywhere and everyone.

The reason why we need to address the problem with stability is because this is the first time something of this intensity has happened, he added.

We have developed this, we have calls from the governments from different organizations, institutions in order to give a tool for organizations and businesses to fight this battle and the battle for secure countries against terrorists is compliance, the fight against the COVID or any kind of pandemics is a compliance apart from health things, but you have to recover your credibility, you have to establish that your people have been assured that the best thing has been done”
Charles M. Giacoma, Director General of EIFEC

The two compliance standards being developed for two major areas include sanitization service providers, which are the professional organizations that provide service to clean and maintain safety.

We need to have a standard that worldwide organizations could be follow and to be verified, the other is for every kind of organization whether it be a coffee shop to nuclear power plants, airlines to trains, or even ships, so we need two standards that will cover two kinds of activities, said Giacoma.

EIFEC is the international standards organization for export compliance and are currently working on a programme for the overall management of the health emergency and all related risks given that Covid-19 has generated a new need for developing specific compliance policies and programmes worldwide.

The institute has a mission to foster international security through managing and promoting the EU Export Compliance Framework which provides innovative solutions to the most critical challenges in the global marketplace.
