Telecommunications provider, Dhiraagu has warned of scam phone calls and text messages from overseas.
A number of its customers have been receiving one-ring calls from unknown international numbers as well as text messages attempting to get call backs.
While some of the numbers that customers have been receiving calls from have been shared online, area code shows Russian and Swiss phone numbers.
Dhiraagu, via Twitter, advised all “to be cautious and not respond to such messages or calls from unknown international numbers”.
Such calls are referred to as Wangiri calls, where the caller hangs up after one ring or less, before the receiver can answer. The intention of the scammer is to entice people to call back the number upon seeing a missed call.
If an individual calls back, they maybe be charged at premium rates once connected, while a message plays to convince the caller to stay on the line for as long as possible.
