The People’s Majlis has forwarded President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s nominations to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), for committee review.
The nominations will be reviewed by the parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee.
President Solih forwarded the nominations for parliamentary review following the dismissal of an HRCM member. HRCM’s Vice President Mohamed Zahid was removed from position through a parliamentary vote, on July 22.
The three names forwarded for committee review are Mariyam Muna, Ahmed Sameen native to Thoddhoo island in Alif Alif atoll and Fathmath Maheera Mohamed, native to Hinnavaru island in Lhaviyani atoll.
The president made appointments to the commission on September 8; Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, Moomina Waheed and Dr Ahmed Adham Abdulla.
They received parliamentary approval on September 6 and were among the eight names forwarded for the vacancies. Their names were approved by the committee on human rights and gender after further review which included interview sessions.
Appointments to HRCM are made under the powers vested to the president under Section 5(a) of the Human Rights Commission Act (Act 6/2006), which stipulates that the members of HRCM shall be appointed by the president after parliamentary approval.
