Maldives has reported 65 additional cases of the Covid-19 infection.

Nightly statistics publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) reveal that 54 cases were detected in the greater Malé region whereas 11 cases were confirmed from residential islands.

Sunday’s cases were confirmed from the 1,583 samples tested within the past 24 hours.

The new cases include 51 Maldivians and 14 foreigners and has pushed the total case count to 10,530.

HPA also reported that 54 more patients have recovered from the virus, pushing the total number of recoveries to 9,364.

While 73 virus-stricken patients were hospitalized for treatment by Saturday, the number dropped to 67 by 6pm, Sunday.

The number of Covid-19 patients seeking treatment at isolation facilities has dropped to 492, from 526 within the past 24 hours.

Maldives currently has 1,125 active cases of the infection.

The public health authority went on to revealed that there are active coronavirus cases in 21 residential islands and 20 resorts with the inclusion of 10 tourists and 16 resort workers. There are 121 active cases in total out of which 58 are local cases and 63, foreign.

Six patients are receiving treatment for the global pandemic, at the Villingili Covid Facility in Gaaf Alif atoll.

While the pandemic has taken 34 lives in the island nation since the first few cases were confirmed from a resort on March 7, 6,666 out of the total case count, are Maldivians, this is 63 percent of the tally. The remaining 37 percent are foreigners.

Authorities began implementing stricter measures after a surge in Covid-19 cases being reported since they entered the third phase of lockdown easing. As such, a seven-hour curfew was implemented in August which was followed by a vehicle movement restriction measure for nine hours after sundown. However, this has since been lifted and vehicles are only prohibited from operating during the curfew hours, from 10pm to 5am currently.
