Parliament Speaker and former President, Mohamed Nasheed has gone into home quarantine after returning from the United Kingdom.
Communication Director at the People’s Majlis said that the speaker returned to Male’ on Tuesday, after a personal trip to the UK, adding that he is currently in home quarantine as required by health authorities.
Those returning from abroad are required to undergo a 14-day home quarantine period, as part of the measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the island nation. They will only be released after testing negative for the virus.
Individuals under home quarantine are given a special permit, if required to go out on urgent business. However, those found violating the quarantine order are now being fined.
The former president travelled to the United Kingdom on August 28.
During the unofficial visit to the UK, Nasheed began his work as the Thematic Ambassador for the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF). As such, he met with CVF's current chair, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Kalam Abdul Momen, and senior officials of the forum including members of the Bangladeshi Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
During the forum, The CVF Chair praised Nasheed's contributions within the field of environment.
