Statistics have revealed that 63 percent of Covid-19 cases reported in the Maldives are of locals.
By 6pm Saturday, Maldives recorded a total of 9,052 Covid-19 cases out of which 5,732 are Maldivians, which is 63.3 percent of the tally.
The remaining 36.7 percent is foreigners out of which 2,525 are Bangladeshi nationals, which is 27.8 percent of the case count.
5.72 percent of the tally are Indian nationals, totaling 518.
According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s Covid-19 dashboard, 79 nationals from Nepal have also contracted the virus in the island nation, as well as 14 nationals from Philippines.
Out of the over 9,000 Covid-19 cases detected in the Maldives since the pandemic surfaced on March 7, 6,312 are men and 2,720 are women.
While the case count saw an increase in mid-July following the implementation of the third phase of lockdown easing, a majority of cases being discovered were of Maldivians. As such, authorities have stressed that a majority of the recently discovered Covid-19 cases are of young Maldivians.
