Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has extended condolences to his Lebanese counterpart, Charbel Wehbe, following the devastating explosion that rocked Beirut, Lebanon on Tuesday.

In FM Shahid’s message to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of the Republic of Lebanon, he stated that he is deeply saddened by the shocking explosion that occurred in Beirut on Tuesday evening which caused loss of lives, injuries and the devastation in the wake of it.

Let me express my sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the families of the bereaved, and to all those who are directly and indirectly affected.”

Further, he stated that the Maldives stands in solidarity with Lebanon and the prayers and well wishes of the Maldivian people are with the people of Lebanon during this difficult time.

Maldives remains confident that Lebanon and the residents of Beirut will recover, rebuild and thrive to be stronger.

International media reports that the explosion shook Beirut on Tuesday, killing at least 100 and leaving thousands wounded in its wake.

Lebanon authorities are yet to identify the cause of the explosion, however, the blast is to have caused USD five billion worth of damage, CNN cited the Beirut's governor.
