Maldives reports 18th death from Covid-19

An 89-yo local woman passed away on Sunday night

An 89-year-old Maldivian has passed away from Covid-19 in the Maldives.

She was being treated at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility, and passed away at 8:57 on Sunday.

This is the 18th death from Covid-19 in Maldives, where a total of 4,164 cases have been confirmed since March.

It is also the second death from Covid-19 in 24 hours, a 52-year-old local woman passed away on Saturday night.

The island nation saw a surge in Covid-19 cases after the government began the third phase of lockdown easing, in July.

Health officials have expressed concern over the increase in patients requiring treatment at hospitals, as well as over the “increasing trend in infections in the elderly age group” and increase in cases with no links to previously confirmed cases

However, there are no plans to return to a state of lockdown yet.
