A vaccine is yet to be discovered

The government of Maldives is working to ensure the country is among the first countries to have access to vaccination of the global Covid-19 pandemic, when a vaccine be discovered.

This was revealed by the Minister of Health, Abdulla Ameen during a virtual ceremony held on Tuesday night, where Covid-19 treatment facilities were inaugurated in Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll and Gan island in Laamu atoll.

The minister noted that Maldives was among the first to have participated in the World Health Organization (WHO)’s “Call for Action”.

Maldives participated in the event held throughout March because the government believes that it is vital for an island nation facing scarcity of adequate equipment and facilities to have access to a cure for the pandemic, if found.

Ameen noted that discussions and work are underway to provide adequate means for healthcare across the entire nation, in the country’s Covid-19 response efforts.

Over 100 vaccines are being developed worldwide to test for a cure for the pandemic. At the top of the vaccination race is the Oxford University, which has revealed positive results in the human trial of their vaccination.
