The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed 83% of the airport development project in Hoarafushi island of Haa Alif atoll.
Highlighting that the project is moving forward, MTCC revealed that the project has progressed by 83% and that they are currently expecting the delivery of asphalt and other materials needed for asphalt work, which will begin once the consignment is received.
The project includes the construction of a runway measuring 1,200 meters, an apron and taxiway measuring 8,635 square meters, a parking area measuring 9,473 square meters as well as service roads in front of the terminal, said the company.
MTCC was also contracted to build a fire access road measuring 1,718 square meters and a 720-meter airport security and beach fence area.
In August 2019, the company successfully completed dredging 842,200 cubic meters as well as reclamation work for the project, which began during March 2019.
MTCC completed approximately 1,120 meters of revetment by March 2020 and expects to complete the entire project by September 2020.
The airport was initially planned to be built in Maafinolhu by the previous administration of now incarcerated former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and it was assigned to MTCC on March 25, 2019 for MVR 198 million.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated the construction on March 31, 2019.
