Maldives Police Service has issued over 8,000 fines for Covid-19 lockdown breaches.
While a total of 8,186 lockdown violators have been fined thus far since April 15, 464 were placed in police custody following repeat offences.
249 people were fined on Sunday alone, which includes 245 people from Malé and two from its suburban districts Hulhumalé and Villimalé, each.
16 people were taking into custody on Sunday; 13 from Malé and three from Hulhumalé.
Police took action against 273 lockdown violators on Saturday; 262 were fined and 11 were arrested. The total amount of penalties is now over MVR eight million.
While a person found to have violated the director general of public health's lockdown order will face a MVR 1,000 fine the first time, repeat offenders will be arrested under Article 533 (a) of the Penal Code.
Malé City was placed on lockdown following the detection of a Covid-19 community transmission. While the city is currently in phase one of lockdown easing, police permits are still required to go out.
