The People’s Majlis on Monday sent the Maldives Energy and Maldives Higher Education bills for further review.

The two bills were accepted by the parliament at Monday’s sitting.

Maldives Energy Bill was submitted by Inguraidhoo constituency MP Hassan Ahmed, and was accepted by the Majlis with the votes of 62 MPs. It was forwarded to the committee on environment and climate change.

The second bill submitted on Monday was the Maldives Higher Education Bill, submitted by Velidhoo constituency MP Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeq. While 62 MPs voted to accept the bill, it was forwarded to the committee on national development and heritage for further review.

Further, a resolution by Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir was rejected at the third sitting of the second session of the year. While only four members voted in favour of the resolution calling to lift ban on long line fishing as well as to issue permits for hunting sharks and turtles, 53 MPs voted against the resolution.

67 out of 85 MPs attended Monday’s sitting, with opposition lawmakers choosing to boycott it. At the last sitting held, where Majlis voted on the fifth amendment to the constitution, things got heated on the parliament floor with MPs pushing and shoving each other.
