State-run Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has a bed capacity of nearly 500, exclusively for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.
This was revealed by the hospital’s Medical Director Dr. Ali Nazeem during Wednesday night’s press briefing at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC).
The doctor revealed that there are currently 10 beds for coronavirus-stricken patients that need intensive care treatment, at the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital, more commonly referred to as DH11.
While Tree Top Hospital in Hulhumalé was recently allocated as the primary National Covid-19 Treatment Center, Dr. Nazeem revealed that treatment at the hospital began on May 6 and that it has been three weeks since services are being provided for Covid-19 patients, moved to Tree Top from IGMH.
Further, the doctor revealed that the Hulhumalé Medical Facility, that was completed and handed over to IGMH on May 24, has a 289-bed capacity.
Authorities will be using the facility’s blocks A and B for the treatment of Covid-19 patients; Block A has a 221-bed capacity and Block B has a 68-bed capacity.
Block B also has a two-bed ICU and a single bed exclusive for hemodialysis service.
100 ICU beds will be developed at Tree Top. Currently the hospital has 25 ICU beds with ventilators, two patients are currently on ventilator support. The hospital has a 100-patient capacity. Further, the doctor revealed that 30 medical students that arrived from Nepal and Bangladesh have joined the workforce.
These postgraduate students, will be working as medical officers, said Nazeem.
Highlighting that there are students who have reached the completion of their studies, the doctor stated that their experiences and work are “very good” and are active in the workforce currently.
