Maldives announces Sunday the start of Eid Al-Fitr

Eid Al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, during which Muslims observe a month-long fast

Maldives has confirmed that Eid Al-Fitr will begin on Sunday.

The ministry made the decision after holding a meeting to observe the moon, on Friday evening.

Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali announced that Sunday will be the start of Eid Al-Fitr, as the Shawwal moon was not sighted across the country on Friday evening.

Hence, the ministry has declared Saturday as the 30th day of Ramadan and Sunday as the beginning of Eid.

Eid Al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, during which Muslims observe a month-long fast.

While authorities had previously asked to offer this year’s Eid-Al-Fitr prayer at home rather than in congregation 'under exceptional circumstances' due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, islands that do not have any restrictive measures will be allowed to do so in congregation.
