Tweets sending out birthday greetings to jailed former President Abdulla Yameen have been retweeted by parliament speaker and former president, Mohamed Nasheed.

While the tweets shared by Nasheed were sent out by lawmakers from the opposition.

The first tweet shared by the current speaker is from Naifaru constituency MP Ahmed Shiyam, and the second is from Maavashu constituency MP and Yameen administration’s economic minister Mohamed Saeed.

It is not clear on why the former president retweeted these, especially given that one of them mentions that Yameen was jailed unjustly.

These two former presidents can be described as the worst critics of each other, as well as the most influential political leaders in the country. While Nasheed is the leader of the current ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Yameen leads the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

While Yameen was convicted of money laundering in November 2019, Nasheed was jailed during his presidencyin 2015; he was later allowed to travel to the United Kingdom for medical purposes and only returned after the fall of Yameen’s presidency.

Nasheed is yet to comment on Yameen's conviction and subsequent jail sentence.
