Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested two individuals from Feridhoo island in Alif Alif atoll, for violating the travel restriction placed across the Maldives.
Police received the report of two Maldivian men, disobeying the island council and the Covid-19 task force stationed on the island on May 19. They are to have departed the island without the required permission from authorities.
Arrested under a court order on May 20 are a 37-year-old and a 20-year-old.
Police continue to stress on the importance of everybody’s cooperation in order to control the spread of the virus in the Maldives.
Unauthorized travel between islands has been banned after the discovery of a Covid-19 community transmission in the capital Malé City on April 15.
The Greater Malé Region has been locked down since and the lockdown will remain in effect until May 28.
Authorities continue to take action against such violations, and the Civil Court has also been issuing orders on individuals who refuse to be taken into quarantine and provide samples as well.
While several measures are being implemented to curb the spread of the pandemic, authorities fear that the worst is yet to come, having predicted that the country is headed into a surge, within the next few weeks.
