A motion to dismiss members of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has been placed on the agenda for Monday’s parliament sitting.
It was proposed by the speaker, following a requested by the Majlis’ human rights committee after reviewing the commission's work.
The parliament is yet to disclose details of the motion.
While the Human Rights Commission Act states that HRCm must comprise of five members those currently at the commissioner are; President Aminath Eenas, Vice President Mohamed Zahid and members Moosa Ali Kaleyfaan, Naiveen Abdulla and Aishath Afreen Mohamed.
With the exception of the VP, the other members were appointed to the commission in 2015. Zahid was appointed in 2017.
While the motion to dismiss HRCM members have been placed on the agenda, a number of lawmakers have stated that the commission has failed to fulfill their responsibilities. This was especially highlighted during the debate held over the prison audit report, in 2019, and there were calls to remove the members the as well.
