The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a white alert over some regions where adverse weather conditions are expected.

The white alert was issued over the regions between Meemu atoll and Gaaf Dhaal atoll, after predicting heavy rain and thunderstorms to prevail across the region with winds gusting at 40 miles per hour.

During the period between 3:45pm to 8pm, torrential rain and thunderstorms are expected to prevail over these regions.

Scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms are expected over most of the Maldives.

The department predicts seas to be moderate becoming rough in the south and moderate throughout the rest of the country, and showers are expected to be heavy at times over the south and some parts in the north.

In addition, surface winds are expected to vary between west to northwesterly at 13 – 23 miles per hour in the south and at 6 – 16 miles per hour over the rest of the country, with winds gusting 45 miles per hour during showers.

MET urged all individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather.

As the monsoon season is upon the island nation, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has also urged the citizens to practice caution, especially with the wide-spreading Covid-19 virus across the country. Further, citizens have been urged to practice caution against influenza and dengue as well.
