Earthquake occurred 2101 km away from Maldives

Meteorology Department says that Maldives had not experienced the 5.9 earthquake that hit Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday.

Maldives Meteorological Services said the earthquake occurred 2101 km away from the Maldives and occurred around 0751 hrs Tuesday. The Service adds that there was no immediate danger to the Maldives.

US Geological Survey says the earthquake was a minor one, occurring 10 km below the sea. No tsunami warning was issued.

In 2010, an earthquake measuring 7.7 hit the island. Parts of Male’ felt the tremors of the quake, but there was no damage.

The service had issued a white alert for atolls between Vaavu and Laamu atoll.
