A 29-year-old has been arrested for breaching Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Police said that the man had left Maalhos island of Baa atoll in a canoe without authorization, and that he was “caught hiding” in Dharavandhoo island of the same atoll.

Noting that the case is under investigation, police appealed to all to not to “risk the lives of everyone else with such selfish acts”.

There have been a number of arrests from the outlying islands as well as the greater Male' region, for breaching the director general of public health's travel restriction order.

Unauthorized travel between islands have been banned following the detection of a Covid-19 community transmission in the capital on April 15. Since then, Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in the north as well.
