Over MVR four million from the Zakat Fund has been used on Covid-19 efforts, says Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir.
In an interview on RaajjeTV’s live coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic, the minister said that the MVR four million was used to provide relief to those most affected.
As such, MVR three million was used to assist those stranded abroad while the remaining is to be used to help those in the country.
This MVR one million is to be given to the gender ministry, to assist in their work such as providing temporary shelters to those forced out of their homes.
He added that the amount will be reviewed, if the situation arises.
Earlier on Wednesday, authorities revealed that over 90 people were provided temporary shelter since a lockdown was announced in the capital on April 15.
Spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Aziz revealed that these include people forced out of their homes due to failure in paying rent, as well as people with special needs and drug addicts.
Individuals who are distressed or have been asked to move out of their homes have been asked to contact the Gender Ministry through 3328393 for assistance.
Landlords have been urged to refrain from committing such inhumane acts, as a number of individuals have been laid off work or have been subject to wage cuts or no-pay leaves.
