Bill to ensure rights of those affected by the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, is to be presented to the People’s Majlis.

Hoarafushi constituency MP, Ahmed Saleem, is to submit the motion.

Speaking during the debate held for the motion submitted by Maduvvari constituency MP Adam Shareef, regarding those stranded in the capital with no means to travel to their home islands amid the Covid-19 lockdown, MP Saleem noted that some people are being forced out of homes with some landlords even terminating contracts.

Noting that he has been drafting a bill that outlines legal action that can be taken, Saleem said that he is ready to submit the bill with the approval of the speaker and fellow lawmakers.

The parliamentarian said that he has been receiving reports of people being forced out of homes even in such trying times, as well as of people renting out rooms due to not being able to travel back to their homes.

We should all do whatever we can in this situation. We cannot sit and watch even if one person is suffering. We need to help each other.

The MP further added that “the issues we are seeing are the results of the centralized system in place in the country”.

Saleem further called on authorities to establish a way for Covid-19 testing to be carried out in the islands, as well as treatment facilities “at least in every atoll”. He said that this is necessary, even though costly.
