70 undocumented Bangladeshi workers are to be sent home, via the flight arranged by the neighboring country’s armed forces to evacuate Maldivians stranded abroad.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said that “70 Bangladeshis with undocumented status in Maldives will travel back via the evacuation flight” which is to arrive on Monday.

He added that they will "continue on repatriation of remaining undocumented workers”.

Shahid further thanked his Bangladeshi counterpart, AK Abdul Momen, “for the excellent cooperation”.

On Saturday, the minister revealed that arrangements have been made to evacuate 71 Maldivians stranded in Bangladesh as well as Nepal, via a Bangladesh Armed Forces flight; 53 from Bangladesh and 18 from Nepal.

The foreign minister said that this “is testimony to the close cooperation between the governments of Maldives and Bangladesh”.

Both Ministers Shahid and Momen have spoken twice via phone regarding efforts against Covid-19, and discussed on the repatriation of undocumented workers from Maldives in addition to the safety and welfare of Maldivians in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh donated 100 tonnes of free aid to the country, which includes staple food items, fruits, vegetables as well as essential medicines.
