Council elections delayed amid Covid-19 fears
The announcement was made via a press conference on Thursday evening
The elections were earlier slated for 4 April
The postponed date is 18 April

The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to delay the Local Council Elections set for April 4.

Voting has been delayed until April 18.

The announcement was made by the Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) at a press conference on Thursday evening.

President of the commission, Ahmed Shareef revealed that 18 April is the last date for the postponement.

This decision is followed by the government's decision to declare a state of public health emergency across the entire country, said Shareef.

The announcement was made by Minister of Health, Abdulla Ameen on Thursday.

If the period is further delayed, the commission is to take to court to seek a decision for the LCE, as this will require a legal solution.
