Parliament's committee on economic affairs has decided to summon the Salary and Wages Advisory Board, to discuss their report on minimum wage.
The minimum wage report was first presented to the Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail, who is in charge of the Salary and Wages Advisory Board.
The minister has since presented the report to parliament and the report is currently being reviewed by the Parliament Committee on Economic Affairs.
During a committee meeting on Tuesday, MP for North Thinadhoo Abdul Mughnee proposed to meet with different industry professionals in order to research the report. Likewise, MP for Dhuvaafaru, Ismail Ahmed proposed to hold a meeting with the Salary and Wages Advisory Board first, suggesting that industry professionals can be summoned later.
As such, the People's Majilis has announced a forum for public opinions of the minimum wage issue to be held on Wednesday night from 08:15 pm to 10:30 pm at the People's Majlis Secretariat.
The minimum wage report revealed that more than 40 percent of the Maldivian workforce earn less than MVR 6,000 as a monthly salary. The board recommended to set the minimum wage of MVR 6,400. Additionally, they recommend a minimum wage between MVR6،400-MVR8،600 for civil service and tourism sector workers.
On Monday, the Economic Affairs committee determined to finalise a decision on the minimum wage report by 11th March. This recommendation will be forwarded to the parliament floor next, where members will continue with the bill according the parliamentary procedure.
