All campaign events for the upcoming local council and women's development committee elections are conducted across the country as per the Decentralisation Act, says Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Speaking at a press conference held on Sunday at the party's main office, MDP's campaign spokesperson Afshan Latheef referred to remarks by the PPM-PNC coalition at a press conference held on Friday and stated that the opposition's policies are exactly the same as policies implemented by jailed former President Abdulla Yameen.

Highlighting that the party's campaign events were held across the country, Afshan stated that MDP successfully held the party's campaign launch at a total of 161 islands including the capital city with events held at 181 islands being telecasted live.

All campaign events will be conducted across the country as per the decentralisation legislation, said Afshan, adding that the party aims to include all Maldivian citizens in MDP events.

She also stated that the party has previously noted the low turn-out at the campaign launch held in the capital city.

According to MDP, housing is the main concern of Male' city residents, hence, the party has begun talks with the incumbent administration to find a proper solution. Nasheed also stated that he will work towards addressing concerns of Male city residents.

Moreover, Afshan stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih does not recklessly waste the state budget, unlike former President Yameen who held extravagant ceremonies for every project inauguration.

Afshan further added that projects to build harbours, expand classrooms and establish water and sewerage facilities are currently underway even if every project did not have a large-scale inauguration ceremony.

Additionally, 5000 students are currently studying under the new free degree program, said Afshan.
