The Attorney General’s (AG) Office has raised charges against former Vice President Abdulla Jihad.
AG Office revealed that Jihad has been charged with illicit enrichment on Wednesday, after failing to move out of the residence given to him during his term as vice president despite being told to do so.
While the charges were filed at the Civil Court, the state is seeking to recover MVR 1,109,227 from Jihad as part of rent, maintenance and utility costs.
Noting that the former VP was given two apartments at the “Rehendhi 3” luxury apartment complex in the capital as an official residence during his tenure as VP, the AG Office noted he continued to reside there for over a year after the new administration took over despite being asked to vacate the place.
Hence, the AG Office noted that the state has the authority to obtain the rent for the extra year and three months he resided there.
Further noting that he had received unjust enrichment, the Office said that they are seeking to recover MVR 1,109,227.
Before former President Abdulla Yameen’s term ended in November 2018, Jihad had attempted to buy off the two flats in the luxury apartment complex.
Jihad was the third VP during Yameen’s tenure, he was appointed in June 2016. He is to have vacated the apartments in “Rehendhi 3” on 17th February 2020.
