Only one resort has registered for the adequate number of ballot boxes for the upcoming local council elections thus far, revealed the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
ECM Vice President Ahmed Akram revealed, on Monday, that the opportunity is open for 53 resorts to register to place ballot boxes for the approaching elections, out of which only four-star resort, Club Med Kani Resort, in Kanifinolhu has registered for the adequate amount so far.
Akram went on to add that ballot boxes may only be placed in resorts that have 50 registered eligible voters by the deadline, 27 February.
Further, ECM has also announced its decision to place ballot boxes in foreign countries with over 150 registered voters.
Ballot boxes will also be placed in commercial islands and prison facilities with over 25 registered voters.
This will be the first time the ECM is scheduled to hold two different elections during one day, after the amendments made to the Decentralization Act, following which it is expected to be the first one of its kind. Unlike previous local council elections, only candidates that contest for the position of City Mayors, Atoll Council Presidents and Island Council Presidents can be elected for the position.
Other changes made under the amendments include allocating 33% of council seats for women and extending every councilor's term from three years to five years.
Both the local council elections and women’s development committee elections are slated for 4 April.
