Speaker and former President, Mohamed Nasheed has been ordered to pay MVR 444 to the state.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) made the order after an investigation into complaints that the speaker was using government employees and resources for his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) trips.

While Nasheed read out ACC’s ruling at Wednesday’s sitting, it notes that two Majlis employees traveled with the speaker for the Southern-atolls' Councilors Conference 2019 and added that their ticket prices were MVR 1,222 each.

Nasheed traveled to Fuvahmulah and Addu cities afterwards, ACC emphasized that the ticket prices for his security detail and chief bureau officer -from Gan to the capital- was MVR 1,333.

Noting that the trips to Addu and Fuvahmulah cities were not scheduled originally, ACC said that this led to the expenditure of an additional MVR 444 as the ticket prices from Kooddoo to the capital were at MVR 1,222 at the time.

Hence, the People’s Majlis administration has been asked to collect the money from the speaker and inform the commission.

While Nasheed said that he does not wish to challenge ACC’s decision, he said that he will do so if the members ask him to.
