Jailed former President Abdulla Yameen was brought to the capital city on Wednesday, for medical treatment.
Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) confirmed to RaajjeMV that the former president was brought for treatment on Wednesday, but did not elaborate further on the matter.
However, RaajjeMV understands that he was taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to conduct some tests.
Yameen had highlighted his health issues during an appeal hearing held at the High Court earlier, including heart and mental health issues. He added that he has been receiving treatment for the health condition, even prior to his conviction last November.
The former president had told the court that the condition cannot be treated in Maldives, and that the required tests are not available in the country.
Further claiming that he required surgery for a spine injury, Yameen said that he wished to do so abroad.
Yameen was convicted on money-laundering charges on 28th November 2019, for laundering USD through the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) via a private company SoF, during his presidency. He was sentenced to five years in prison and fined USD five million to be paid within in six months. Earlier this month, the High Court ruled against releasing him on bail.
