Maldivian citizens are once again eligible for on-arrival visa in 40 countries following the country's return to Commonwealth, confirms the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the ministry, Maldivian citizens can once again apply for on-arrival visas at member countries of the Commonwealth. The ministry notes that rejoining the Commonwealth opens more doors for a variety of travel benefits which were suspended following the Maldives' exit from the Commonwealth.
While the government has signed several visa waiver agreements with different countries such as Thailand, UAE, Russia, and Morroco, Commonwealth membership allows additional benefits in member countries such as Sri Lanka and Malaysia, stated the ministry.
Following the country's re-admission to the organisation, arrangements for Maldivians to apply for Commonwealth scholarships were made on the request of Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid during a meeting with Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland on Friday.
The Maldives’ readmittance into the Commonwealth was officially confirmed on February 1st.
