President of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Dr. Ali Shameem has admitted to issues within the body, and is asking for another chance to resolve these.

Dr. Shameem made the appeal during an appearance on RaajjeTV’s ‘FalaSurukhee’ programme on Monday night, hours after the parliament’s committee on independent institutions decided to remove four members of the commission including the president.

The committee made the decision after listening to the concerns of cabinet members, who were presented to Tuesday’s meeting to inquire on the issues faced. The ministers had expressed concern over the delay in CSC’s work.

The CSC president said that he was disappointed by the committee’s decision, stressing that they have been working “within our full capacity.”

While CSC comprises of five members, Shameem said that the members have different educational backgrounds.

Noting that the commission itself faces various obstacles, he stated that they see this “as lessons” and added that issues with the body “can still be solved through discussions.”

Further highlighting that members of the commission have previously been summoned to the committee, the CSC president said that these challenges were shared “but to no avail.”

Shameem added that this is one reason for the delays in commission’s work.

He also expressed concern over the number of employees at CSC, and stressed the importance of reverting to the system where its members are divided into different divisions.

The CSC president also assured his commitment to the commission and its work, and emphasized that he has not been negligent in any matter adding that “this can be seen just by looking at attendance alone.”

Commenting on the comments made by the various cabinet minister’s at Monday’s committee meeting, Dr. Shameem said that the ministers’ concerns should be taken into account as well.

While the independent institutions’ committee has decided to dismiss four out of the five members at the civil service commission, they will be given the opportunity to respond before the People’s Majlis votes on the matter.
