LCE2020: int'l organizations will extend assistance

10 countries to be extended opportunity to observe the upcoming elections

More assistance is expected since Maldives recently rejoined the Commonwealth of Nations officially

Ties with international community have strengthened since the last Presidential Elections

International organizations are expected to extend assistance to the Maldives government for the upcoming local council elections as well, says Vice President of the Elections Commission Ahmed Akram.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s “Fala Surkhee” show, Akram highlighted that the commission has long been receiving assistance from international organizations and that ties between the Maldives and international organizations have observably strengthened since the past presidential elections of 2018.

For the first time in Maldives, international organizations were given the chance to actively participate in the country’s elections during the past local council elections and since then, it has been a norm, highlighted Akram.

Further shedding light on the Maldives recent return to the Commonwealth of Nations after a four-year hiatus, Akram stated that this is expected to pave way for more cooperation from the international community, for upcoming elections.

“The Commonwealth officially actively participated during the past parliamentary elections as well. They even compiled a report with joint efforts from our teams. I want to highlight that the report urges regional countries to take Maldives Elections Commission as an example, after the past parliamentary elections”
Akram

Akram revealed that their organizational skills and transparency in the electoral process caught the commonwealth’s eye.

Highlighting that many countries have accepted the points noted in the Commonwealth report, Akram stated that this has, in turn, lead to enhanced ties and reinforced trust between the Maldives and other countries.

Further, Akram also added that the commission will cover all expenses for 10 countries to observe the local council elections slated for 4 April.
