The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has made the decision to prepone elections for the association's leadership.
President of FAM, Bassam Jaleel announced via Twitter on Tuesday that the motion he had submitted to FAM's executive committee to prepone the elections has been approved. Therefore, the committee has decided to hold elections within the upcoming 45 days, said Bassam.
Stressing that football is more important than any individual person, Bassam further encouraged all interested parties to contest the elections.
Following the announcement, Maziya Sports and Recreation Club (Maziya S&RC) endorsed Bassam's re-election for FAM's president.
The club endorsed Bassam via Twitter on Tuesday, stating that the club's board has unanimously agreed to support Bassam's re-election.
As such, Bassam's term as president of FAM ends on November 20th, 2020. In the past, Bassam stated that the election can be held at any time. Nevertheless, FAM's rules and regulations state that the election must be held before November 20th.
Bassam was elected president of FAM in November 2016 after contesting for the position against former football star, Ahmed Thoriq (Tom).
