The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced the commission's decision to seek the addition of parental leave to the Judges Act.

The commission is to send the request to the Attorney General's Office and the People's Majlis.

According to a press statement released by JSC, the commission has determined to allow judges to be eligible for six months of maternity leave or one month of paternity leave, as stated in the country's Employment Act.

Granting parental leave to working parents is one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's key pledges and has been implemented since March 2019.

JSC further added that the commission has also decided to fast-track trials for cases with hearings pending for over an year to address the issue of backlogged cases.

As such, the commission has requested details and statistics of such cases at the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).
