MP for Makunudhoo constituency, Mohamed Raai, has stated that the old-age pension of MVR 5000 given to people over 65 by the government should be voided for convicted sex offenders.

The MP made the statement during the parliament's human rights’ and gender committee meeting on Sunday which was held to investigate oversight on the side of relevant authorities regarding the rape case of a 2-year-old in Gaafu Alifu Kanduhulhudhoo island that surfaced on Thursday.

At the meeting, Raai suggested cancelling the old-age pension of convicted sex offenders and stated that this motion should be passed via parliament. He further stated that such people do not deserve the old-age pension.

Additionally, Raai declared that the identities of convicted sex offenders should be announced to the public, especially after release, as such information is vital to the safety of the society.
