Council out of stock on spares needed for speed breaker renovation on Ring Road

Road construction work will be completed by the end of 2020

There were dents in some bumpers

Malé City Council has revealed that the stock for spares needed for the renovation of speed breakers is currently out.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, the council’s Deputy Mayor, Shamau Shareef revealed that financial hiccups are the reason for their inability to acquire spares needed for the renovation of speed breakers on the ring road.

Shamau revealed that although funds were allocated for road renovation in the state budget for 2020, the funds are allocated under the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure.

As such, the council has requested for the maintenance of funds for road renovation to be transferred under the council’s authority. If the request is approved, Shamau stated that they will be able to begin the road renovation work within the ongoing year.

This comes at a time residents of the capital have been facing difficulties and challenges in operating vehicles due to the presence of dents in where a few speed breakers are placed on the ring road.

Earlier, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) had even slapped the Ministry of Housing with a fine for going against the rules in compiling an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) in developing the Malé Ring Road.

As such, the road development project was carried out without compiling an EIA, it has been reported.
