The opposition Progressive Coalition has revealed that over 300 people have expressed interested in contesting in the upcoming local council elections through its partners.
While the coalition comprises of former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and newly formed People’s National Congress (PNC), the latter’s deputy leader made the announcement at a press conference held on Saturday.
Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that they have received over 300 forms thus far, adding that more and more are expressing interest.
He further revealed that teams from the Progressive Coalition will travel to Haa Alifu, Shaviyani and Baa atolls on Sunday, in the campaign for April’s council elections.
Noting that each team will travel to every island in their respective atoll, Abdul Raheem said that they will be with opposition and Yameen supporters.
He further claimed that the only was to save the Maldives is “by voting for PPM,” adding that their jailed leader former President Abdulla Yameen also wishes for their success in the local council elections.
The former Fonadhoo constrituency MP said that Yameen “remains steadfast.”
The Local Council Elections 2020 is to be held on April 4.
