The President’s Office has revealed that housing schemes that were to be announced throughout this year, will be announced during 2020.
Incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed the decision to launch a major housing project for Malé residents, in order to ease the congestion in the capital city, during March this concluding year. This was included in the President’s campaign pledges for the presidential election, where he vowed to provide shelter for all those deprived of housing in the capital.
Spokesperson at the office, Ibrahim Hoodh stated that work is currently underway to formulate housing projects and that there are a few things that require reviewing before they can be announced, in the upcoming year.
However, Hoodh refrained from revealing further details of the “ongoing work”.
While congestion in the capital city has been an unresolved issue for years, providing shelter for all those in need is a major pledge included in the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Agenda 19 campaign. This includes providing shelter for families without homes in the capital city throughout the current administration’s five-year tenure.
Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed also reiterated President Solih’s commitment to put this important pledge into effect.
